CODE10 #1 Part 6: Justin’ case
The stories we briefly went through covered some boat’s functions, but CODE10 has one more key player: The designer, Andrej Justin.
Justin Yacht Design knows the essence of performance. He designed CODE8 Racing with good care and had a huge role that CODE8 was a great success in the 10’s. Tamás Simon and Andrej Justin started designing CODE10 in 2015 and only finished in 2019. Before we start the interview with him, don’t forget to read the previous parts of CODE10’s journey. How do you feel after a 6-year-old project of Justin Yacht Design, finally has come to an end and a new boat of yours has launched?
Andrej: Happy as always. I am glad to see every project realised, especially realised in such a good way: best of standards, testing goes as it should, improving all the little details which are often needed on the prototype. …so I expect a successful and very nice sailing boat as we planned her and wished her to be.
What is the first thing that comes to your mind if I say: CODE10
Andrej: Firstly, I would like to sail her. And then I would be very thrilled to see more and more boats on the water, among them hopefully one to be mine.
What would you highlight first on a CODE10? What makes her unique compared to the latest sailing boats on the market?
Andrej: She is a special breed of boats. She is designed and built for fast sailing: everything is designed, built, and engineered to make sailors life as easy as possible on one side and make the performance as good as possible on the other side. There are not many compromises in CODE10 design, which always makes a good result.
There are not a lot of boats like CODE10 on the market. I wish there were more because I like this kind of boats. For example, RC44 is a similar boat in concept. Designing her with Russell (Couts), there were no compromises in the matter of performance, quality of build, materials and technology and this way, she became pretty successful ever since that. The same will happen to CODE10, hopefully.
A bit of a biography of Andrej Justin, the head of Justin Yacht Design:
The designer of our ships, Andrej Justin, was born in Koper, Slovenia, on the Adriatic coast. He studied electronics and civil engineering in Ljubljana – Slovenia and architecture in Graz – Austria. He graduated in Yacht Design at Westlawn Institute of Marine Technology in 1993.
Andrej’s life has been defined by the sea and yachts since the beginning. He designed his first boat for the Slovenian shipbuilding company ELAN.
He has created several racing boats from the 33-foot match race one design JustinTen to the 80-foot carbon, canting keel Maxi Jena. It was built in 2001 but still one of the fastest 80 footers in Europe. His most famous work is the ISAF recognized RC44 high tech racer, designed with America’s Cup legend Russell Coutts.
Which part of the design makes you the proudest?
Andrej: To see smiling partners in these projects, to see people that worked on the projects are happy at the end, also to see the sailors, clients satisfied, to see them being proud to own this sailing boat. That’s the most rewarding part of being a boat designer.
About this very boat? Everything is special: remarkably clean, so minimalistic. She cannot be more minimalistic in the design, as far as I know at this moment. Nothing is placed on this boat, just to look good. CODE10 is about pure functions, pure aerodynamics, pure hydrodynamics, pure deck functionality, and this is it. As clear as it is possible.
Who is the ideal owner of a CODE10? Is she for everybody?
Andrej: Huuuuuh. As I already stated for CODE8 some years ago, this is not a boat for guys who want to be appreciated by their boat’s size or glamorous outlook. This is the boat for guys who appreciate the real values of sailing.
It means a boat must be stable, must perform well, must be nice to sail and drive in almost every condition. She is a powerful boat, and she can also be sailed in a small crew. Of course, in strong winds, a fully crewed yacht will perform better. Never the less the boat will perform really good when you, as a sailor, perform well. She is demanding on one side. She is not forgiving, for sure not, but offers a lot of possibilities to improve your sailing skills and get the most out of her to win races.
She is for those sailors who really enjoy sailing, being on the water to take out of the wind the most driving force, and enjoying every moment of fast and controlled sailing. She is not for those who want to sunbathe and drink cocktails. You can have all of these after she is moored and the sails are down. She is a racing boat and not a caravan.
What about families, Andrej? Would it be suitable for a family with 3 kids to ride with this size of sails?
Andrej: Yes, in light conditions. Otherwise, with specific solutions. For example, I will explain due to my situation. When we will have a CODE10, and now I am referring to my wife and me, we will have some relatively easy handling solutions on the boat. Such as the use of asymmetric (A2) just in extremely light wind, but in most cases, we would use furling headsails: Reacher, J0 and strong wind jib. J1 (working jib), I would have it on soft hanks straight on the forestay, no furling. With these sails, basically four sails plus main, I think we could win many races in Adriatic, in the class and some of them also overall, of course by sailing her right.
We have received critics about CODE10 being overpowered. What do you think about that? What is your advice to them?
Andrej: Every racing boat is over-powered when you can’t handle the sails. If we look at the Star boat: hundred plus years on the sailing scene and it is totally overpowered. It is how to trim the rig, trim the sails, and have the sails shaped as well that extends the range in which you can comfortably sail the boat. For example, when we splashed the first RC44 (I refer to this boat because I know her exceptionally well), we thought we will be able to do races up to 18 kts of true wind. Now the guys do races in 25 kts of true wind. How come? They have learned how to handle the boat better, and sailmakers have learned how to do sails in the right way for this, but she remained an extremely fast boat.
The latest trends are single-handed and double-handed sailing. How suitable is CODE10 for these races?
Andrej: I think we have just answered that with the previous example. I am sure we can handle this boat with my wife. Double handed will not be an issue. And also, this boat will be even better to drive than L30. She is bigger, she has more stability, she is lower, so she doesn’t want to heel so much, she is wider, so it is much comfortable to sail even in extreme conditions.
You need a great autopilot for single-handed, and that’s it, especially with the furling headsails. It should not be an issue at all. It will be much easier to sail than sailing a Mini 6.5 because it behaves much more relaxed, and she is behaving softer in rough conditions because of the length and stability.
